Pilgrimage to Ireland

The Land of Light and Shadow:
Brigid and The Morrigan

Sunday, September 10 - Saturday, September 23, 2023
Dublin to Galway ~ 14 Days

Immerse yourself in the land of the Celts, the Green Isle, and join this small group women’s pilgrimage to the sacred sites of Brigid, Goddess of Fire, of Spring, of Renewal, and of The Morrigan, ancient Ireland’s Dark Goddess. This land of contradictions and contrasts has intrigued visitors for millennia, and its mists, landscapes, and legends continue to enchant.

Meet in Dublin and spend an afternoon exploring this charming capital, including the illuminating Book of Kells, Trinity College, and Dublinia Museum. Or take an equally spiritual – by Irish standards – visit to the Guinness Storehouse or Jameson Distillers. Afterwards, join your fellow travelers for an included welcome meal and introduction.

We will experience thearchitectural mastery that paid homage to the solstice at the ancient passage tombs of NewGrange. Then stand atop the Hill of Kings at Tara, the place of legend and myth, where tribes gathered in times long past.

In Wicklow, we visit Glendalough, an ancient monastic site founded by St. Kevin in the 6th century, and the home of a still standing round tower. Stroll by the lake or the graves marked withintricate Celtic crosses, a symbol of transition, juxtaposition, and adaptation between old pagan religions and the newly introduced Christianity.

One of St. Brigid’s most sacred sites is her cathedral in Kildare, including the round tower – climb to the top if you’d like a bird’s eye view – and the foundation of a fire temple to her Celtic predecessor. Continue your pilgrimage to her holy wells in the area before continuing on to the quaint village of Kildare. From here, we visit the iconic site of the Rock of Cashel, a magnificent ruin that evokes a timeless beauty.

Meditate in the wilds of Dingle, a true immersion in Ireland’s natural world, of coastlines and rolling hills. Somehow, here, one feels she can truly breathe. As we head north to the Cliffs of Moher, we visit Brigid once again at her sacred wells, and take in the bracing air and white cliffs and feel truly free. We continue to Athlone to visit Clonmacnoise, a monastic site founded by St. Ciaran in 544 AD, bathed in beauty, and holding incredible examples of Celtic crosses, a sign of the times of change in the past. Stroll to the nun’s church, a peaceful ruin down a less-traveled path, for a bit of solitude and solace.

Cliffs of Moher Ireland

We draw near to The Morrigan when we visit Rathcroghan, an ancient burial site, and home to Owenyegat, or the Cat’s Cave – Her home. How far you venture in is up to you; there are powerful forces at play in this entrance into the dark, the earth, the inner world?

The opportunity to meditate and integrate presents itself with a stroll through Kylemore Abbey’s grounds, a peaceful estate-turned-Benedictine abbey on the beautiful shores of Kylemore Lough in Connemara. The Wild Atlantic Way feeds the soul, and in this part of the country, between the sea, the green fields, and the stone walls, the world feels timeless.

And it will continue to do so, as we take the ferry to Inismor, the largest of the Aran Islands, a small population that still adheres to many of the more traditional ways of fishing life, weaving, and of course, pub life. Explore bronze age ruins, dramatic cliffs, and a truly unique landscape. The largest of three small islands, this is truly a place where the old Ireland still lives, breathes, and wanders the cliff edges.

Finally, we return to Galway, to say our farewells on the western coast of this island of myth and magic, of fire and darkness.
